During shared reading students are discussing schema, selectively underlining the text, circling unknown words and chunking them, and rereading the text around a unknown word to infer the meaning. While students are left to their own devices they seem to be reading through the passage, and answering the questions in order to be the first one done.

Welcome! I am Miss Anderson!

'The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams' ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Who I am:

Hola, Marhaba, Shalom, and Hello! My name is Chelsea Anderson and I am currently studying Elementary Education, TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language), Spanish, and Language Arts education. I have traveled to a variety of places throughout my college years as well as out of the country to Costa Rica. I have spent summers in Colorado, Arizona, and Costa Rica volunteering in different bilingual and English Language learning (ELL) programs in education. This summer I went to Africa to teach in schools and volunteer in an orphanage. Although I do not know if I am ready to be done with school and would love to continue in a Master's program to teach ELL to college students, I know that being a teacher is an opportunity to be a life-long learner. Having the opportunity to work with a variety of people and to be a part of their story has been refreshing and encouraging. Outside of the classroom, I love spending time with family, outdoors, and running.

Why I am going to be a teacher:

Growing up, I always loved being outdoors and finding ways to entertain myself. As I got older, I would collect old papers from my teachers and the recycling bin at school and take them home to play. My mom got me my first chalkboard and whiteboard and I made a little classroom in our basement. My cousin even gave me his old desk! I fell in love with teaching at a very young age. I also loved helping people and making them feel better than when I first saw them.
Throughout high school and experiences in college, I have developed a passion for international students. I love learning about cultures, people, and analyze how people are put together. I try to use these gifts an interest to help encourage each person in the goals they have. I believe teaching is more than coming to school each day. Often times, the teacher is learning from the students. Learning involves both the process and the meaning. My vocation is to be a life-long learner, mentor, and an investor in student's lives.
I can think of a couple of teachers in high school who possessed a level of compassion and commitment that is hard to find. I want to continue to raise up the next generation and help people as they helped me. er in a classroom that is continually thinking of questions and creative ideas will produce life-longer learners. I want to challenge each student to think differently and in new ways so they are more adaptable and interactive in new situations and experiences.

What I hope to achieve through teaching:

I want to create an interactive and safe learning environment that strives for creativity. I want to model how learning is an adventure and full of explorations. I want students to take ownership of their learning and to develop a self-discipline to apply themselves as a person and in the classroom. I want my students to walk away at the end of the day, having more interesting questions or a desire to share it with someone else. I want my students to know how connected they are to one another and society. I want to be a catalyst for students to take their learning and take it to a new level of curiosity about other cultures and opportunities around them.
